Ooty: Good rains in the wooded zones, including the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve limits, has reduced the threat of forest fire and brought hope for good wildlife tourism, amid bloom of attractive Delonix flowers which are the first summer colours of nature this year in Nilgiris.
While it is needless to mention how the jungles in the Nilgiris suffered due to lack of rains and how the jungle fire ravaged the woods across the hills here in the past three months, the couple of good showers that drenched the jungles in recent times has started bringing welcome change.
The greenery has begun to reappear. Coupled with this is the bloom of Delonix flowers atop the delonix trees in the hills, especially in the wooded zones and the roadsides in the tea gardens, they have brought colours, elegance to summer.
The flamboyance of Delonix is not only providing feast to the eyes but could definitely incite the nature lovers to enjoy the scenario and click some photos of the jungle floral beauties.
Stating that this tree is called as ‘gulmohar’ in Hindi and its common name is “umbrella tree” for its spectacular shape and canopy, Dr S. Rajan, scientist at the central Ayush wing here, said that its deep brilliant orange- red coloured matured flowers and the arrangements of flowers on tree tops in clusters, makes one feel as if one is walking under a red-canopy. This species usually blooms between April and June, he added.
