Manipur-like violence against women happened under TD: MLC Varudhu Kalyani
VISAKHAPATNAM: Strongly condemning the violence in Manipur against women, north Andhra MLC Varudhu Kalyani said worse incidents have taken place under the TD’s regime in the state.
Addressing a press conference in Visakhapatnam on Saturday, Kalyani stated that the followers of former minister and senior TD leader Bandaru Satyanarayana Murthy had disrobed and beaten up a tribal woman in Jerripothupalem of Pendurthi mandal.
Highlighting that incident, women supporters of TD must stage a dharna outside Murthy’s house before condemning violence taking place elsewhere, the MLC said. She also called upon women TD supporters to protest outside Jana Sena leader Pawan Kalyan’s house for alleging that volunteers were involved in the trafficking of women.
Kalyani also faulted Chandrababu Naidu for his silence over the harassment of women during his tenure as the Chief Minister. She said that when a woman tahsildar, Vanajakshi, was dragged onto the streets and beaten by former MLA Chintamaneni Prabhakar, Naidu had maintained a stoic silence. He was also responsible for keeping then MLA R.K. Roja away from the Assembly for one year. “Naidu could not protect the women of Vijayawada, who were trapped in a racket,” she said.
Referring to the meeting organized by TD Mahila leaders and supporters, the MLC alleged that in the name of the self-respect of women, these leaders, led by TD Mahila wing president Vangalapudi Anitha, hurled abuses at YSRC leaders.
“Being a woman and a teacher, Anitha should have desisted from using such filthy language. Is this what she has been teaching children at school,” Kalyani asked.
She then praised Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy for always caring about the welfare of women in the state. “During the last four years, the Chief Minister sanctioned all welfare schemes in the name of women. He has also expressed concern regarding the safety, security and progress of women,” she added.
