85 Private ITIs get \'zero\' admissions
KAKINADA: The response for admissions in Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) has been very poor in the first phase of counseling. The poor pass percentage in SSC examination is said to be the main reason for the fall in inductions.
In private it is, almost all the seats are vacant. According to sources, nearly 85 private ITIs in seven districts --Kakinada, Konaseema, East Godavari, West Godavari, Eluru, Krishna and NTR -- could not get even a single student for admission. Even in government ITIs, only 10 per cent of the seats have been filled up.
The second phase of counseling begins on August 30. It is anticipated that private and government ITIs may get more admissions in the second phase. Poor pass percentage in SSC examinations, setting up of new government junior colleges and a desire from students to opt for engineering courses are cited as the main reasons for the poor enrolment in ITIs.
Private junior college managements lured SSC students to enrol them in their respective colleges in Intermediate courses.
Regional deputy director of training and employment in the Technical Education department, Nagavardhan, told Deccan Chronicle: “There are a total of 16,900 seats open for admission, out of which only 751 seats have been filled so far. The second phase counseling will be held for the remaining 16,149 seats.”
Krishna district ITI admissions convener G Hari Dharmendra said students who have enrolled for the ITI courses will have a lot of employment avenues. “Even for self- employment, ITI courses are of great help. Banks will also give loans for ITI students. As soon as students qualify for ITI, they can get jobs in the Railways, electricity sector, companies etc with a starting salary of `12,000. By the next year, they can get `25,000 as salary upon completion of the probation.”
“However, even engineering graduates can’t get such offers.”
In Krishna district, 15 private ITIs could not get even a single enrollment while two ITIs could get eight seats. The Krishna government ITI in Gudivada also could get only eight seats filled so far out of its 156 allotted seats.
Dharmendra said he had given vast publicity to the importance of ITI courses. “Most of the private companies are getting ready to conduct placement drives this year. Eluru district ITI convener Rajitha said ITI students can join in the second year polytechnic course by qualifying in bridge courses. Thereafter, they can get into the second year engineering courses.
In West Godavari district, only two seats -- one each in two it is -- have been filled and there was no single admission in 13 private ITIs. ITI students should write the examinations online.
Kakinada ITI admissions convener Varma said infrastructure facilities are being developed in the ITIs.
