T R Baalu firm on airport at Parandur
Chennai: Sriperumbudur MP and Kanchipuram District Development coordinating committee head, T R Baalu, said the second airport for Chennai would come up at the proposed site in Parandur at any cost and the villagers, who are now up in arms against it, would be convinced not to oppose it by driving home the importance of the project.
Speaking to the media after a meeting at the Kanchipuram Collector’s office, Baalu said that it was natural for people to oppose a development project when there was a possibility of their lands being taken away but a solution could be found for that.
He also announced that a world class new road would be laid between Chennai and the new airport at Parandur for easy access to the facility, when it became operational. Initial measures had been taken up for the construction of the new 100 feet road.
Since land acquisition was involved in the implementation of the airport project, there would be resistance from those living in the locality for generations as they would have to relocate to other places but that could be tackled, he said.
All due procedures would be followed before initiating the land acquisition process and public hearing would be held as per the wishes of the people, besides obtaining environmental clearance, Baalu added.
Last week, villagers who were invited for initial talks with the government representatives at Kanchipuram stormed out of the meeting in protest and made it clear that they did not want the airport in their land. Baalu was among the government representatives who met them.
