Err in protocol may have cost Shamna Tasnim her life
KOCHI: The report of the three-member panel headed by Joint Director of Medical Education (JDME) Dr K Sreekumari into the death of medico Shamna Tasnim is understood to have underscored that the protocols in treating a patient at a medical college were not followed in the case of the medico. The report is learnt to have said that Shamna, who came to the ward of Ernakulam Government Medical College (EGMC) after admission, was not examined by the PG doctor in charge.
He is also learnt to have not discussed the details of the case with the assistant professor who was on duty. According to sources, it is also found that records to the effect that every protocol was followed were later made. The JDME report is understood to have also raised the question whether the records have been forged. The report has also learnt to have recorded that life-saving drugs were not available where Shamna was admitted. It is the duty of the nurse on duty to make available and check such things.
The report is learnt to have blamed both doctors and nurses who attended on Shamna. The report has also pointed to the lack of infrastructure facilities at the medical college. Head of the department of medicine and a PG doctor at EMC were suspended on the basis of the report pending a detailed inquiry by the State Government. The report is yet to come to public domain.
