CM Pinarayi Vijayan to push Brahmapuram

CM calls meet on waste-to-energy plant.

KOCHI: With the proposed waste to energy plant at Brahmapuram still remaining in the conceptual stage, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has intervened to hasten its implementation. A high-level meeting chaired by the Chief Minister will be held this week at Thiruvananthapuram to finalise the allocation of the remaining four acres of land at Brahmapuram to GJ Eco Power Private Limited, which won the bid to set up the waste to energy plant. The company has sought 20 acres of land for constructing the plant of which 16 acres have already been allocated to it. As documents of the remaining 4 acres are yet to be cleared, the land has not been allocated.

Since Brahmapuram is a signature project in the centralised waste treatment sector, the government wants it to be up and running without further delay and replicate the model, if it is successful, according to sources. According to sources at the Eco Power Private Limited, the company can start construction of the plant within a month, after the land is allocated. Though the plan was to complete the construction in 18 months, the state government had asked whether works could be finished in 12 months, sources said.

"We are impressed by the seriousness the government attaches to waste management initiatives in the state. While waste dumping yards at Brahmapuram and Vilappilsala require centralized waste management systems, decentralized models will be adequate for small villages. GJ Eco Power will be investing Rs. 20 crore to promote development of more indigenous technologies which can augment growth of centralized as well as decentralized waste management solutions," said Giby George, MD of GJ Eco Power Pvt Ltd. The plant will have a capacity of treating 300 tonnes of waste and can generate 5 to 6 MW of electricity (1.5 lakh units) per day.
