Authorities crack down on autos transporting excess students

Visakhapatnam: Officials of the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Visakhapatnam have cracked down on autos taking excess students to schools following the recent accident involving an auto and a truck accident.

Teams of officials, led by deputy transport commissioner (DTO) G.C. Rajaratnam conducted a series of special checks to ensure compliance with rules by auto drivers.

According to the DTO, Rajaratnam autos transporting children to schools can carry maximum six students per auto. Additionally, auto drivers must possess valid documents, such as permits, insurance and fitness certificates.

Surprise checks were conducted simultaneously at Maddilapalem, NAD and Gajuwaka, resulting in seizure of 28 autos. Hefty fines have also been imposed.
According to an official, auto drivers found carrying between 8 to 10 passengers will face a fine of ₹1,000. Vehicles of those carrying more than 10 students will be seized.

Authorities are also providing counselling to auto drivers to raise awareness about safety.
