Visually challenged to get new audio library in Kerala

2,500 NSS volunteers from 250 units preparing audio books.

KOZHIKODE: For the visually challenged, getting access to study materials or reading a fiction of their favorite author or getting information in general, perhaps, are the toughest challenges. The National Service Scheme (NSS) in Kerala has introduced digital audiobooks for them.

More than 25,000 volunteers from 250 NSS units of engineering and polytechnic institutions are at present busy working on the audio library of books with the Kerala Federation of the Blind members.

The library, N-Vast, would include academic and literary books for all age groups.
"According to Stephen King, books are uniquely portable magic. Hence, here we help them to experience this magic," said Abdul Jabbar Ahmed, programme coordinator of NSS Kerala cell.

"It will contain the maximum number and variety of speaking books to support visually challenged fraternity. This library would help in reading a book over and over again without difficulty."

"The KFB has an extensive collection of books of different genres they read with the aid of others," he said. The first set of audiobooks was released in Thiruvananthapuram, and the NSS unit now plans to spread it to other districts.
