Karnataka: Five cops suspended after man dies by suicide in custody
Karwar: Five police personnel have been placed under suspension after a man allegedly committed suicide while in the custody of the Honnavar police. He committed suicide by consuming poison in the police station.
Dileep Mandal (39) of Patna, was accused of cheating people. Together with an associate, Mandal was engaged in stealing gold under the pretext of cleaning it.
Following complaint, the Honnavar police took Mandal and his associate into custody for questioning on Saturday. While at the police station, Dileep requested water and while having water, he is said to have consumed a chemical substance which he carried with him. Despite being immediately rushed to the hospital, he did not respond to treatment and died.
Superintendent of Police Vishnuvardhan visited the scene, and a case has been registered at the Honnavar station.
In light of this incident, five police personnel, including the Inspector, Sub Inspector, and three constables of Honnavar, have been placed under suspension.
As per the procedure the investigation into the case will be undertaken by officials from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The CID DySP and his team are expected to arrive in Honnavar by Sunday afternoon.
