Kozhikode Corporation put on a week's notice

Repair drainages or face music: Collector

KOZHIKODE: Kozhikode District Collector N Prasanth has ordered the Kozhikode Municipal Corporation to repair and close all the flooded and dilapidated drainages in the City limit within one week. He has also warned of invoking legal action against the officials concerned if they failed to comply with the orders.

The Collector, who is also the chairman of District Disaster Management Authority, issued orders after conducting inspections of City drains. He has also issued similar warnings to the PWD (Roads) Executive Engineer and Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project Project Manager. In a letter sent to Corporation Secretary T.P Satheesan , the District Collector said that the condition of the drainages in the City was ‘grave’ and it could result in serious disasters like the recent incident in which a 55-year-old man lost his life after falling into an open drain at Mankavu.

"I therefore request that all preventive measures be taken to safeguard the life of pedestrians as well as travelers. Necessary steps should be taken within seven days. Repair and close all flooded and dilapidated drainages within the Corporation limits," the letter dated July 22 said. The Collector warned that failure to do so would result in legal proceedings under the Disaster Management Act 2005.
