Heavy Rains in Hyderabad, Yellow Alert for Days Ahead

HYDERABAD: The city experienced short intense rain spells during late afternoon on Monday, which brought traffic to standstill at many places., even as the weather bureau said that the monsoon had started withdrawing, eight days behind the normal date of September 17.

The normal date for the complete withdrawal of the monsoon is October 15. This year is the 13th consecutive delayed monsoon retreat. The withdrawal of the monsoon is declared after observing certain conditions in the extreme north-west from September 1 including lack of rainfall activity for five straight days and considerable reduction in moisture content.

India has received 796.4 mm of rain during this monsoon season so far, compared to a normal of 843.2 mm, representing a deficit of six per cent. Rainfall between 94 per cent and 106 per cent of the long-period average (LPA) is considered normal.

In the city, rain caused heavy traffic jams in Musheerabad, Secunderabad railway station area, Uppal, Tarnaka, Parade Ground, Begumpet, Punjagutta, Ameerpet, Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Shaikpet, Tolichowki, Raidurgam, Gachibowli, Rajendranagar, Mehdipatnam, Masab Tank, Khairatabad, Tank Bund, PVNR Road, Old City, Nampally, Koti, Abids, and many other major junctions and flyovers.

Apart from the rain water stagnating on the roads, sewage water overflowing added to the woes of motorists, especially those on two-wheelers..

Adilabad, Kamareddy, Mahbubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Nalgonda, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Rangareddy and Yadadri Bhuvangiri districts also saw rains.

IMD has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms and heavy rainfall for the next five days in the state as heavy rains accompanied with lightning and thunderstorms are very likely to occur in many parts.
