HYDERABAD: The BJP has decided that it will take up enumeration of crop loss following untimely rains and hailstorms in various districts in Telangana and submit its findings to the respective district collectors. Sanjay said that if the government did not respond promptly to the reports, to organise agitations in support of immediate and adequate compensation for farmers.
The BJP move comes even as the state government has ordered a similar exercise with adverse weather conditions affecting crops in thousands of acres in several districts.
Speaking with district BJP presidents and the BJP Kisan Morcha leaders during a teleconference on Tuesday, state BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar called on party leaders and cadre to make field visits in the next two days and collect details of crop loss.
Sanjay said farmers across Telangana had suffered irrecoverable losses following continuous unseasonal rains and hailstorms. “In many places, ready-to-harvest crops were destroyed. The losses are even more devastating because many paddy farmers spent around Rs 20,000 each to control brown plant hopper infestation,” he said.
Sanjay slammed Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao for failing to keep his promise of paying Rs 10,000 as compensation per acre for damaged crops, claiming that if the government had opened procurement centres on time, 30 to 40 per cent of farmers would not have lost their crops. "As a result of government laxity, harvesting was delayed, ultimately hurting farmers," he explained.
