KOCHI: MG University, ever since it started the Centralised Allotment Process (CAP) for UG courses in 2011, has been witnessing rush of applicants for the science and arts degree courses with 65,000-70,000 students applying for 32,000 seats. In this five year period, 40 new colleges added 5500 seats as well, according to officials manning the admission process, which points to signs of increase in demand.
“The condition of self-financing colleges in this sector is much better than that of engineering colleges. More than 75 percent of total seats in these colleges get filled while 100 percent seats get filled in better performing ones. Those who find it difficult to get students are located in remote areas and those having inferior infrastructure and faculty. Fee is also another aspect. But almost all colleges are able to fill BCom seats,” said a senior MGU official manning CAP.
The courses that of late are catching the fancy of students are BSc Geology and BSc Psychology, with many demanding them. “BCom comes first in demand followed by BA English, Economics, BSc Physics, Chemistry, Zoology and Botany. Meritorious students who figure in the first 10,000 ranks of engineering are now turning to physics including many having full in the subject while in good colleges there are no seats vacant for zoology and botany,” said the official.
Students have a tendency to opt out if the desired college and course do not come their way. “That is why despite the overwhelming demand, many seats in self-financing colleges remain vacant. However, 97 percent of the seats in the above said courses in the aided and government colleges get filled,” said the official. Limited SF colleges under MGU offer science courses – BSc Physics and Chemistry in one college, BSc Geology and Psychology in five colleges and BSc Petroleum Geology in one college.
