Denied van, man carries wife's body for 12 kms

Collector orders probe into alleged denial of government ambulance.

Bhubaneswar: In a shocking incident, a man hailing from Orissa’s remote Kalahandi district had to carry the body of his wife out of the hospital on his shoulders after he failed to obtain a government mortuary van or an ambulance from the hospital authorities.

According to reports reaching here on Friday, the incident occurred on Thursday morning in Kalahandi district headquarters town Bhwanipatna, around 550 km from here, when 42-year-old Amang Dei, who was being treated for tuberculosis at the district headquarters hospital, died late on Wednesday night.

Despite all his efforts, Amang’s husband Dana Majhi was not able to avail an ambulance till Thursday morning. Out of sheer desperation, he wrapped the body of his wife in a piece of bedsheet and carried it on his shoulders.

“Since I’m poor and I did not have a single penny left with me at the time of my wife’s death, I desperately pleaded with the hospital authorities to provide me government ambulance to carry the body to Melghara village under Thuamul Rampur block, 62 km from district headquarters. However, all my pleadings fell on deaf ears. They said they cannot offer me any help,” Dana said.

When journalists came to know that Dana was carrying the body of his wife on his shoulders, they followed him. By the time they caught up with him, he had already covered 12 km.
