Intruding structures to be removed from the flight path
Chennai: The Airports Authority of India has identified 192 obstructions on the flight path of aircraft using the second runway of the Chennai airport for landing and takeoff and ordered the Chengalpattu district administration to take steps to remove them with a view to enabling flights run through the entire span of the 2.89 km long runway.
As of now, the aircraft could use only 2.11 km of the second run away as a plethora of skyscrapers, huge trees, electricity towers and lamp posts were found to be obstructing the flight path. So the AAI appointed an expert committee that identified the obstructions.
While the 90 multi-storied buildings in the Kolapakkam area behind the airport premises were found to be illegal constructions, the other man-made structures like lamp posts, cell phone towers and electricity towers have also been put up there without necessary permission.
While notices would be issued to the building owners, measures had to be taken to make the electricity board, telecom companies remove those structures from the locality to clear the path for planes.
The authorities will also have to cut down the huge trees that are obstructing the flight route, too.
