Andhra Pradesh student delegation @ The World Bank!

Washington DC: A delegation from the government schools of Andhra Pradesh, India, recently left a lasting impression on the international stage during their visit to the World Bank headquarters in Washington DC.

Comprising 10 students, two teachers, and two senior officials, including Mr. B Srinivasa Rao (IAS), State Project Director of Samagra Siksha, and Rathnakar Pandugayala, the Andhra Pradesh government representatives were invited for an informal lunch and an elaborate session on Education & Health with leading World Bank officials.

The World Bank officials, including Ms. Rifat Hasan, Lead Health Specialist, Ms. Tracy Wilichowski, World Bank Analyst, and Ms. Laura Gregory, Senior Education Specialist, commended the education initiatives undertaken by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy.

These initiatives included the acclaimed 'AmmaVodi programme, 'Nadu-Nedu' school infrastructure development project, and the introduction of English language education along with the use of bilingual textbooks in government schools. The World Bank expressed a strong desire to become more deeply involved in the YSRCP government's objective to invest in human capital.

During the engagement, the World Bank officials sought input from Andhra Pradesh government school students on how this partnership could be enhanced in the future. The students offered insightful suggestions, demonstrating their commitment to improving education and international cooperation. This is what they proposed:

1. A program designed specifically to sensitise the parent community to prioritise and encourage education.

2. Set up a common online platform for students across the world to exchange ideas and discuss topics like climate change, sustainable development.

3. Kickstart numerous exchange programmes with top foreign universities.

4. Introduction of activity clubs in government schools (environment/culture).

5. Introduce model United Nations concept and hold state level competitions on the same.
