Kannur: The Kannur Medical College authorities have raised serious allegations against the CITU, including deliberately preventing emergency cases from entering the college and disconnecting the power during examination time. The authorities have submitted an affidavit in the High Court stating that the ongoing CITU protest in the hospital was forcing the management to shift to Malappuaram. They also demanded the deployment of central forces to ensure security to the campus alleging the state police were helping the protesters.
Principal Dr. S. Muneeruddin Ahmed said that though the management had agreed to accept all the demands of the CITU-backed employees except the one for bonus, the workers were continuing the protest for the last 43 days. “There are 45 employees who include sweepers and other unqualified workers who were recruited from among the locals to encourage their participation in the college’s development. However, with the help of the CITU, they were raising many new demands and protesting by blocking the entry of staff and students to the college. No medical college in India is working on trade union terms, but the management agreed to their demands,” he said.
Though the protesters went to the labour authorities, they lost. “I have been appointed as superintendent to conduct examination for the medical students by the government, but because of the protest, I cannot discharge my duties. They are also disconnecting power at times and making noise which distracts the students while examination is going on,” he added.
