Kannur councillors yet to get KILA training

Lack of proper training affected functioning of Corporation.

KANNUR: The Kannur Municipal Corporation councillors have not yet got training in the Kerala Institute of Local Administration. The corporation was created six months ago without ensuring proper facilities, and the lack of training for the councillors has affected its smooth functioning. Mayor E.P. Latha said that the Kannur councillors should have been given priority in training. “Ours is the youngest corporation in the state.

Many of the councillors are dealing with a vast area like corporation ward for the first time. They have to deal with many complex laws in municipal Act and also explain the restrictions imposed by those Acts on us,” she said. She had requested the government to give training to the councillors as well as staff of the corporation.

However, KILA director Dr P.P. Balan said that they were ready to give training at any time for the corporation members. “We have already given training to the councillors at Regional Centre in Thalassery. But the participation from the Kannur Corporation is less and they have not yet requested us for further training,” he said.

“Since we have to deal with many civic body members, we cannot call all of them to the headquarters in Thrissur. The Kozhikode Mayor took a special
interest in training and paid the fee for it in which all of them participated actively. If Kannur Corporation likes to do the same, we are happy to give them special training,” he added.
