KOZHIKODE: Vexed with the poor amenities in the government quarters, the employees of Kozhikode Medical College Hospital are moving out to private accommodation in the city. More than 300 families are at present residing in the government MCH quarters, which are dilapidated and have no security.
The majority of staff quarters here were constructed in the 1950s when the MCH started functioning. Since then no renovation has been done in these seven categories of residential blocks. The unscientific construction of the septic tanks in the quarters has created big problems.
“The poor quality of pipes and electric wiring has caused many problems, including sanitation and plumbing issues,” said Anil Chandran, an employee. Every year huge sums are spent for the renovation but the living condition of hundreds of people has not increased. The PWD started the construction of new Government MCH quarters one year ago but the works are moving at a snail’s pace, he added.
“The building has developed cracks resulting in leakage and is in a state of disrepair. Our only hope is the construction of the new flat as per the government order,” he pointed out. The plumbing and electrification materials used were of low quality. This had caused damage to electrical and electronic equipment.
“The drainage system was constructed in an unscientific manner, leading to poor sanitation and unhygienic surroundings”, said C. Vinod, a resident staying here with his family since 2000. “We fear the coming monsoon season, which can create problems, including leakage of pipe connecting the septic tank,” he added.
