Govt should revamp MG University education: Dr Rajan Gurukkal
KOTTYAM: The LDF government should improve the academic atmosphere in MG University by implementing the Prof M. Vijayan committee’s recommendations on Choice- Based Credit and Semester System (CBCSS), according to noted historian and former Vice-Chancellor, Dr Rajan Gurukkal.
The CBCSS is integral to upgrading the under-graduate education, he said. Dr Gurukkal told DC that the recommendations which had been “disfigured and defeated” by the Prof Hridayakumary committee have to be restored to nurture the talents of undergraduate students. The main emphasis of the CBCSS is shifting the focus from “teacher-centric education to student-centric education.”
It also allows the students to choose inter-disciplinary and intra-disciplinary courses, skill-oriented papers and gives them more flexibility. He also demanded that the ‘Scholar in Residence’ programme which was stopped by the previous government should be reintroduced. As per the programme, Nobel laureates should be brought for interaction with the post-graduate students.
