Krishna river washes down crocodiles to Narayanpet village

HYDERABAD: A group of mugger crocodiles that were washed downstream along the Krishna River to Pasupula village in Makthal mandal of Narayanpet district caused excitement and concern among residents on Wednesday.

A video of some villagers, in a boat, driving the crocodiles further downstream went viral during the day.

A group of more than a dozen crocodiles was seen resting on a rocky outcrop in the river, when villagers were seen approaching the reptiles and shooing them into the waters, downstream, to ensure they did not return.

Narayanpet DFO Veena said it was not uncommon to see crocodiles getting washed down when Krishna River experiences floods along its 70-kilometre stretch in the district.

“This is seen almost every year, but this time, the number of crocodiles was surprising. Sometimes, they get washed into fields when the river overflows. We have been working with farmers and villagers and anytime we receive information about crocodiles being stuck, they are rescued and released in a remote part of the river,” she said.
