DMK refuses to tie up with TMC

Also, sources said Congress played a major role in convincing Karunanidhi that roping in TMC would bring no good to the alliance.

Chennai: Tamil Maanila Congress' hopes of aligning with the DMK for the local body polls crashed on Monday with party chief M. Karunanidhi red flagging the move initiated by his son and party treasurer M.K. Stalin.

TMC, which suffered a humiliating defeat in the May 16 Assembly elections in an alliance with DMDK-PWA, had last week proposed for arriving at an electoral understanding with the DMK during his meeting with Mr Stalin.

“The alliance with DMK is not happening. TMC will not be part of any alliance this local body polls. Those interested and those influential in their areas can contest the elections on their own,” TMC leader G.K. Vasan told his partymen, sources told DC quoting him. “DMK chief M. Karunanidhi, we have been told, rejected the proposal to include TMC into the alliance,” a senior TMC leader said. Sources said Mr Karunanidhi was upset with Mr Stalin since he entertained Mr Vasan without consulting him.

The fact that Mr Karunanidhi was unhappy with Mr Vasan's announcement that his party wants an alliance with the DMK was clear last week when party general secretary K Anbhazhagan made it clear that the DMK will contest the civic elections along with the same parties that contested the Assembly elections along with the party. Also, sources said Congress played a major role in convincing Karunanidhi that roping in TMC would bring no good to the alliance.
