Kozhikode: Teacher's land to house 15 families
Kozhikode: Jayasree Sebastian, a teacher at St Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Kallanode who donated one-acre land, is excited over the offer of the Indian Relief Committee.
The Dubai-based charity will build free houses on her land for more than 15 homeless families in Maruthonkara and Chakkittapara panchayats.
The property co-owned by her husband Dr V.K. Manoj, an orthopaedic surgeon in Dubai, is located near Kadantharapuzhya at Chempanoda in Chakkittapara.
“The major challenge was to find best people to fund. Now since the IRC has come forward, we are relieved,” said Ms Sebastian. Among the 15 beneficiaries, a few will go to her old students.
Even though the idea came out after the recent flood, the plot will not be going to the flood victims, but those who don’t own a house or land or the capacity to build one.
"Since they have no privilege to get a house as per the rehabilitation scheme of the government, we decided to donate," she said.
"The only demand to whoever constructs them was to build an eco-friendly home that can also withstand any future calamities."
The documents of the property were handed over to the excise and labour minister T.P. Ramakrishnan.
