Maoist encounter: Ammini had waited years to see Kuppu Devaraj

Though married and has two children, he had always been on the move, moving from one jungle to other.

KOZHIKODE: Ammini, 84, mother of Kuppu Devaraj, the Maoist killed deep in the jungle, laments about the plight of her son. Talking to DC, she said that she was here to have a last look at her son’s face whom she missed for the last several decades. A native of Krishnagiri district in Tamil Nadu known for its Maoist influence, Kuppu Devaraj alias Shanker, 62, had attracted to Maoist movements at an early age. When gunned down by police in the interiors of Nilambur forests, he was the Central Committee member of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) in South India.

Though married and has two children, he had always been on the move, moving from one jungle to other. Being one of the most backward regions in Tamil Nadu, Krishnagiri is notorious for its Maoist influence. Ammini insisted that she should get a chance to have a last glimpse of her son. “I have lost my husband at an early age. Kuppu was an ordinary child. During his young age, he was working in a company to eke out a living. I don’t know what went wrong,” she said.

“Now everything is over. I have been waiting for long to have a look at him. But it came this way.” However, the family members are not sure about taking the body to his native village. So the entire family including brother Sreedharan and two sisters reached Kozhikode in the wee hours of the day.
