Organ Failure Identified as Primary Cause in Covid-19 Positive Patient's Death at KGH

Visakhapatnam: The death of a 51-year-old woman at King George Hospital (KGH) was mainly due to organ failure, though she had tested positive for Covid-19.

Hospital superintendent Ashok Kumar clarified that she had initially been admitted to the Chest Hospital on Dec 22 following health complications including acute respiratory distress syndrome, acute kidney failure and multi-organ dysfunction syndrome).

A routine Covid-19 test conducted at that time gave positive results.

Due to the complexity of her condition, she was referred to King George Hospital, Visakhapatnam, on Dec 24 for specialized care and dialysis. The medical team at KGH administered treatment, and samples were sent to the Vijayawada central laboratory for Corona Genome determination. The patient passed away at 3am on Tuesday, he said.

“The woman's pre-existing health conditions were the primary contributors to her demise,” the hospital superintendent stated.

The district medical and health officer confirmed that the woman's death was due to organ failure rather than a viral infection.

Two other patients admitted to KGH with head injuries also tested positive for Covid-19.

As of now, only two positive Covid-19 cases have been reported in Visakhapatnam and 2 cases in Srikakulam. Samples have been sent for genomic sequencing to gain a better understanding of the virus's presence and its variants in the region.
