Telangana: Kakatiya era trove found
Warangal: A box of jewellery presumed to be from the 13th Century Kakatiya period, was recently unearthed near the Ganapeshwaralayam in Mulugu Ghanpur in Jayashankar Bhupalapalli in the course of de-silting the Errammagadda lake.
The discovery was hushed up by the tractor owner and crane owner who found the treasure as they decided to share it. It however came to the notice of the police when the two fell out.
The police confirmed that a box of gold ornaments was unearthed. “We are still investigating how much gold was inside the box and how much was sold off. We have not filed a case yet or arrested anyone,” said Ghanpur sub-inspector Vijay Kumar.
The police has not divulged the identity of the two persons or given details of the ornaments as the case is still under investigation.
Ms N.R. Visalatchy, director, department of archaeology and museums, has deputed two senior officials, Dr D. Ramulu Naik and archaeology consultant S.S. Rangacharyulu to the site. “We have been asked by our director to visit the place and submit a report,” Mr Naik told Deccan Chronicle.
He says the temples in the vicinity date back to the 13th Century Kakatiya period.
“There are 12 sub-temples to the main temple. Two main temples are being renovated. There is a compound wall, followed by a mud wall. The place where the treasure was found is purportedly outside the mud wall, in a field. Unless we speak to the police, we cannot say anything at this juncture,” Mr Naik said.
