SC adjourns hearing on TS plea against Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan

Hyderabad: The Supreme Court on Monday adjourned the hearing of the Telangana government’s petition against Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, over a deadlock on Bills passed by the state legislature, to April 10.

The Telangana government, in its petition, alleged that the Governor was creating a “constitutional impasse” by giving her approval for the Bills.

On Monday, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta submitted to the Supreme Court bench of Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice P.S. Narasimha and Justice J.B. Pardiwala that he had discussed the issue with the Governor and sought time to get instructions and statements from the Governor’s Secretariat.

Senior advocate Dushyant Dave, appearing for the Telangana government, cited examples of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, where Bills are assented to by the Governor within seven days and a month, respectively. He submitted that the Telangana Governor has been sitting on the Bills for months without a decision.

The bench said it was not inclined to issue a direction in the case as the Solicitor General would get the Governor’s statement within two days. It also refused Dave’s request to adjourn the case to March 29.
