Uppal Skywalk becomes new centre of attraction
HYDERABAD: A day after its inauguration, the Uppal Skywalk which was meant for pedestrians to cross the roads buzzing with traffic turned into something of a tourist attraction. Families and groups came to enjoy the view from above, and take pictures.
There were pedestrians who took to the skywalk to avoid crossing the road at peril to their lives, but it was more of a hangout place.
But the work is still incomplete. Only one lift was working, and a pedestrian said that the bridge would be more convenient for senior citizens and physically handicapped persons once the lift start working.
Work was still underway to make all eight lifts and four escalators functional.
Sudhakar Reddy, working at the electricity board nearby, said that the skywalk was convenient and safe.
But V. Gangadhar, a senior citizen, came all the way from Madhapur by Metro Rail to see the structure for himself.
“I saw this skywalk on YouTube and came over to see how convenient and user-friendly it is. The place is well-built and beautiful. But measures need to be taken so that its purpose is fulfilled,” said Gangadhar.
K. Shri Vaishnavi, a student of Sri Ratna College of Physiotherapy, was there with her friends and found it to be a great place. B. Niharika said it was convenient for those travelling by the Metro Rail.
But then, perhaps because the lifts weren’t working, many pedestrians could still be seen weaving their way across speeding vehicles or at the zebra crossings as if the bridge did not exist.
