Kozhikode: Agency cheats B Tech students
KOZHIKODE: Last July, the B Tech (electronics and communications) final semester students of Vimal Jyothi Engineering College, Chemperi, were in a jubilant mood. Reason: All of them were selected in the campus recruitment with an offer of Rs 15,000 to Rs 22,000 a month.
Veena, Abhijit, Henna, Rosemi, Reshma, Sharath....... all of them were eager to join. But a year after, they are cursing themselves as the entire episode of recruitment was proved a fake show, staged by a fraud.
The recruiter who had siphoned off a huge sum charging Rs 2,000 per student also had backed out.
One of the companies, Polaris Technologies, Chennai, turned to be non-existent while two others feigned innocence.
“When we reached the ‘Polaris Technologies’, Chennai, to our dismay we found another BPO company,” said one of the students who preferred anonymity.
“When we queried its administrator, it was revealed that there was a firm in the same name there earlier, but the offer letters were fake as it had folded much earlier,” he said.
All the students returned and complained to the Vimal Jyothi management, but proved futile. The management failed to approach police fearing that it would bring shame to the institution.
“What worries us more is the fact that it had collected an enormous sum from students but failed to inquire the veracity of the recruiters,” he said. “We lost valuable three months and many opportunities.”
Another group of students who had offered jobs to some other companies in
Chennai also were denied the promised employment and salary. However, few are trying their luck while majority left the job due to lack of facilities, guaranteed salary and working environment.
Passed out in April, these students failed to explore possibilities for other jobs as the placement agency deputed by the institution had already promised them jobs. We even lost our chances to join other higher courses,” lamented a student who still believes that the institution would find a way out.
However, Fr Jinu Vadakkemulanjanal, its administrator, told DC that the agency had promised placement but refused later. “Behind the curtain, moves are on to sort out the issue and ensure placement for the students, though some of them had already moved out for some training programmes,” he said.
He also parted with the name of the recruiter, one Thyagarajan who along with a woman conducted the campus recruitment and provided the offer letters for all students. An inquiry team from the institution also went to Chennai and confirmed that they had paid for a fraudulent recruiter.
