Kollam police keeps Maoists under scanner
KOLLAM: As the debate over the death of suspected Maoists gets heated up, the security agencies in Kollam where Maoism had shown its presence keep vigil on moves of groups having possible links with them. “The police is keeping a constant watch on them, some of whom were arrested earlier for such activities and out on bail now. The trial of a case involving Maoists is still going on in a court here,” a highly placed official told DC.
The local police in May last year arrested persons behind the attack on Nitta Gelatin office in Ernakulam in November 2014 from Kundara. The close aides of Maoist leader Roopesh, Anandan (50) and Remanan alias Anil (44), were under UAPA for procuring SIM cards for Anoop Mathew George, a gang member of Roopesh, by forging documents.
However, after the arrest, Remanan justified saying being a Maoist they ‘address the issues faced by the common man and are against the inequalities created by the authorities in the society’. Remanan and Anandan were Red Flag volunteers of the CPI (ML) in 2009. Mr Roopesh was presented before a court in Kottarakkara last week in connection with the case. He allegedly contacted a weapon dealer in Coimbatore using one of those SIM cards procured, which led to the arrest of the duo. Anandan's mother Chellamma (70) allegedly committed suicide in their house.
