Warangal: Expressing concern over the increasing communal politics in the country, newly appointed president of the Indian History Congress (IHC) Adithya Mukherjee stated that there was a need to adopt the ideology of the former
prime minister late Jawaharlal Nehru to protect democracy in the country.
The three-day 82nd session of the IHC, under the leadership of vice-chancellor Prof. Thatikonda Ramesh, began at Kakatiya University in Hanamkonda on Thursday.
Delivering his talk on ‘Jawaharlal Nehru in our Past, Present and Future’, Mukharjee, the chief guest of the event, appealed to historians to expose the current situations prevailing in India and some communal forces which
were trying to spread canards to demonise Nehru in a bid to ‘expunge’ him from the Indian history by maligning his image.
“Nehru is one of the most influential and greatest personalities of India. He tried to fill the fighting spirit among the people. By freeing India from the clutches of the British, he strived greatly to uplift the country and
the standards of the people who were living in the dark under colonial rule,” he added.
He opined that with the separation of the country, issues with Pakistan and China, the agriculture crisis and the Kashmir problem apart from recent enormous changes in the education system and the amendment brought in the Indian Constitution were becoming hurdles and questioning the democracy in the country.
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) retired professor Mrudhula Mukharjee found fault with the BJP government at the Centre for portraying Indian History in a wrong manner to the people. Stressing the need to stand against the
communal forces trying to kill democracy in the country, she said it was the responsibility of historians to protect the greatest Indian History so that it can be passed on to future generations.
