Godavari rises, keeping officials on high alert
VIJAYAWADA: The water level in Godavari river started rising again by registering 13.90ft, with a discharge of 13 lakh cusecs of water into the sea from Sir Arthur Cotton barrage at 9 pm.
The second warning was in force and the water level in the river was expected to rise further. A third warning was in force at Bhadrachalam, with the water level reported at 53.10ft there.
The water level in the river remained at 14.30ft with a discharge of 13.57 lakh cusecs from 3am on Friday and the level started falling from 4pm. It started to rise again from 9pm and it was expected to rise further in the next two days.
The Konaseema district authorities deployed 750 volunteers with one for each half-a-km distance along the river course and strengthened 42 weak flood banks. They kept 2,000 sandbags in each village vulnerable to flooding. People would be evacuated based on need and officials have identified 25 habitations to shift them.
Some 250 boats have been kept ready at 65 identified boating points for the benefit of the stranded people. Moreover, 98 pregnant women were shifted to community health centres or other places.
In Eluru district, the authorities set up relief camps for the benefit of the Godvari flood-hit people from Kukkunuru and Velerupadu mandals and evacuated them to such camps. Officials arranged milk, drinking water and food for the camps in addition to providing health care to the needy.
In Krishna river too, the authorities discharged 2.60 lakh cusecs from the Prakasam barrage into the sea at 8pm and they were keeping a close watch on emerging situations in the low-lying areas to avoid any trouble to inhabitants in case of a flooding.
State disaster management authority said NDRF and SDRF teams comprising four personnel each were involved in relief works for the flood-hit people in the affected districts of Godavari and Krishna rivers.
