Accused found guilty torching Krishna Pillai memorial
ALAPPUZHA: The Crime Branch team probing the controversial Krishna Pillai memorial attack has filed a chargesheet before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Alappuzha reiterating the findings of the Special Investigation Team. The SIT had arrested five CPM activists and charged them in the P. Krishna Pillai memorial torching case.
The chargesheet states P. Sabu, the former local secretary of the CPM Kannarkad as the first accused. Latheesh B. Chandran is the second accused and the former member of personal staff of Opposition leader V.S. Achuthanandan, CPM workers Rajesh Rajan, Pramod and Deepu are others in the chargesheet.
The SIT investigated the case and later handed over the probe to the Crime Branch. The SIT had arrested the accused, but they pleaded not guilty. Later, the state government handed over the case to Crime Branch and they reached a conclusion that the accused are culprits and factional feud in the CPM led to the torching of the memorial on October 31, 2013.
The local police had also suspected Latheesh in the initial stage of investigation and they decided to conduct Narco-analysis test on him. But he had filed a petition in the court and refrain from the test earlier. After that the state government had handed over the case to Crime Branch.
The factional feud in the Part led to the incident. The local residents noticed the fire on the thatched roof of memorial. They doused fire with the help of Fire and Rescue Service.
Investigation team said that the dissidents in the CPM Kanjikuzhi area committee and the district leader C B Chandrababu were came under suspicion.. Deepu is a neighbor of the memorialand he lodged complaint to the police on the attack.
The investigation team also suspected some of the senior leaders of the CPM were also involved in the incident, but they cannot prove it in the investigation.
The memorial was the home of P Krishna Pillai who used as a hide out when the communist movement active in 1940. He died at the house after snake bite. The CPM and CPI had been jointly protecting it as a monument of Krishna Pillai.
