THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The rattling sounds of heavy downpours are the best camouflage that a robber can get for house breaks. Every monsoon, the city and its suburbs experience a steep rise in house breaks during showers and the city police has now appealed the citizens to be vigilant against them.
“There is little chance of a citizen waking up in a rainy night and preventing house breaks,” said city police commissioner Sparjan Kumar. “So the best thing to do is to keep your eyes and ears open during mornings. All thieves scan the areas they plan to strike during the day time. I request all citizens to inform the police about suspicious people. The residents associations should be in touch with local patrol team.”
While the police claim to have updated its database of serial offenders who come across the border, newbie thieves will be a hard nut to crack. “Generally these regular offenders land up in custody from railway stations and bus stops during morning but it could be hard to spot newbies,” Mr Sparjan Kumar said.
A dozen house breaks happened in Vellayani, Pappanamcode and Nemom areas alone in 2014. The police found that some of the arrested thieves happened to be from bandit villages of Tamil Nadu who entered state via Punalur.
Similarly monsoon housebreak cases were reported last year around Neyyatinkara and Balarampuram in suburbs apart from places such as Vanchiyoor and Pettah. The city police chief said a special meeting will be called on Tuesday to beef up patrolling day and night during the monsoon.
