Hyderabad: Walls on the Hills to come down
Hyderabad: Walls as high as 40 feet, built on Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills and the Old City have been identified as threats during monsoons by the GHMC.
The 40-feet compound wall of Padmalaya Studios in Jubilee Hills has been identified as one such structure. The GHMC town planning wing is likely to issue demolition notices across the city once the commissioner approves.
GHMC is also asking owners to check the strength of these compound walls.
In several areas including Somajiguda and Pahadi Shareef, old compound walls made of mud and limestone are18-inch wide. However, the width of the walls was later reduced to 9 inch and then to 4.
GHMC commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy on Wednesday conducted an inspection in Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills and asked officers to check the safety of the retaining walls constructed in the hilly areas in GHMC limits.
He also directed Town Planning officials to inspect such retaining walls and big buildings to check the stability of the same, as to whether they can withstand the rain. “If such big, highly-damaged walls are identified, the town planning wing will issue notices to the owners to submit stability certificates,” he said.
In May, a labourer was killed when a wall collapsed on him in Attapur. In 2014, two labourers were buried alive when a mud wall collapsed at a construction site on SD Road in Secunderabad.
