CPM wants Theyyam sans rituals
KOZHIKODE: The CPM has differed with the demand of Dalit organisations to stop showcasing the ritualistic ‘Theyyam’ in public venues. Though the party leaders say the issue needs discussion, it is felt that ‘Theyyam’ should scale new heights breaking the shackles of rituals. In Kannur and Kasargod districts, both ‘Theyyam’ and Communism are inseparable in the sentiments of a vast majority of people. A convention organised by Uthara Kerala Malaya Samudaya Uddarana Sangham at Payyannur on Sunday decided to protest against the public performances of ‘Theyyam’ sans rituals.
The representatives of Malaya, Vannan, Koppala, Pulaya and Mavilaan communities, who perform the art, spoke against staging the art without rituals. But two CPM leaders differed with the sentiment. “Our decision is to protest against performing ‘Theyyam’ in public venues without sticking to rituals. If rituals are adhered to, it could be staged outside Kavu, temple and tharavad,” said Mr B.M. Rajan Panicker, state joint secretary of the Sangham. But sticking to rituals in a public place is not feasible. The Sangham will seek the mandate of various Kazhakams and Tharavadus, controlled by OBC communities, in the issue and meet the chief minister and culture minister.
It also agreed to boycott the artistes who perform in public places even after an official announcement has been made. Responding to the issue, CPM Kannur district secretary P. Jayarajan said that the objection was when ‘Theyyam’ was performed in Republic Day parades and in Asiad Games. “The same people performed Theyyam annually in Republic Day parade in New Delhi. There was no issue then. If someone comes forward to perform the art in public venues, the CPM will support them,” Jayarajan told DC. When the Congress supported Dalit organisations, the BJP has said that it was an attempt to malign Hindu culture.
