Thiruvananthapuram: The APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University has issued an order reducing the eligibility criterion for promotion of BTech students from second semester to third semester. As per the order of Vice-Chancellor Kuncheria P. Isaac on Saturday, the eligibility criterion for registering to the third semester B.Tech programme has been reduced to 26 credits from 35 credits.
The decision to make changes in the earlier order was taken following the pressure from the student unions who had reportedly urged the university to continue with the present system where no student will be detained till the course is completed. As per the earlier decision, only students who have at least 35 of the 47 credits in the first and second semester will be promoted to the third semester.
University Pro-Vice-Chancellor M. Abdul Rahman told DC that the university had decided not to go back on the year out scheme where students who had only a minimum of a stipulated number of credits get promoted to the next stage. Moreover, the present decision to allow students with 26 credits was restricted to this year. From next year, only students with 35 credits will be allowed permission. Mr Rahman said. Only students with 80 out of the 94 credits will be allowed promotion from fourth semester to fifth semester and only students with 110 out of the 124 credits will be promoted from sixth semester to seventh semester, Mr Rahman said.
