Industries unit looks on as fake LED bulbs dim Hyderabad

The survey covered 200 electrical retail outlets in major cities including Hyderabad.

Hyderabad: The city markets are flooded with spurious LED bulbs with local manufacturers bypassing quality checks by the industries department. Hyderabad is on the list of cities where poor quality LED bulbs are sold. Three-fourths of LED bulbs sold in India were were found to be non-compliant with government’s consumer safety standards, said market research firm Nielsen citing a survey. The survey covered 200 electrical retail outlets in major cities including Hyderabad.

A senior IPS officer said that the TS industries department which grants licence has a weak quality control system. “Many manufacturers bypass quality checks and release the product in the market”, he said. While residents can purchase LED lights from retailers, GHMC has sells the bulbs at subsidised rates. LED streetlights which were installed recently by the GHMC have reportedly fused. Mr R.S. Rajesh Singh, who has lodged a complaint with the consumer forum on the matter, said that the 15-watt LED bulb he had purchased from a retailer in Malakajgiri had fused after two days.

The retailer refused to refund the money or accept a complaint. Those who had purchased the LED bulbs also found them to be of poor quality. Mr K.R. Pankaj said he had ordered five LED bulbs from Shopclues.com one of which did not work. The light output from a 12-watt LED natural white bulb light was less than a 7-watt LED lamp, he said.
