TS misusing PD Act, even after SC strictures: Raja Singh’s counsel
HYDERABAD: A division bench of Telangana High Court, comprising A. Abhishek Reddy and J. Sridevi, on Monday heard the petition that challenged invoking of Preventive Detention Act against legislator T. Raja Singh.
Senior counsel L. Ravichander, representing T. Usharani, wife of Raja Singh, objected to the contentions of the state government and the police on slapping the PD Act against Singh. He said that the government had done likewise earlier against their political rivals, even after the Supreme Court had pulled up the Telangana government. The counsel pointed out the illegalities, infirmities and contentions made by the government in the counter copy, in order to support the PD Act against the MLA.
The state government and police had stated that around 100 criminal cases were pending against the detenu but later said that 18 cases were pending. He pointed out that three cases booked against him were for his statements during Uttar Pradesh elections, Srirama navami festival and allegedly against the Prophet. How could a person be booked under the PD Act for making statements? he wondered.
Further, he argued that the Telangana government was not running a school on ethics to decide whether the statements of the detenu are good or bad. He also brought to the notice of the court that illegible documents were given to Singh for his signature during detention.
The court adjourned the case to Tuesday.
