Power trips in MGM Hospital for over two hours

Parents of infants in SNCU and emergency ward patients face anxious moments

Warangal: Certain patients and their caretakers panicked when power supply to MGM Hospital got disrupted for over two hours around midnight on Friday.

MGM is the only big hospital catering to the needs of the north Telangana region.

The hospital is equipped with generators. But they are not in a working condition. As a result, patients faced severe problems, particularly in emergency ward, acute medical care unit (AMCU), special new-born care unit
(SNCU), respiratory intensive care unit (RICU) and operation theatres.

Parents of new-born children in SNCU were particularly anxious about availability of oxygen for the children.

Doctors of the emergency ward and operation theatre also faced problems in attending to the emergencies.

On orders of MGM Hospital superintendent V. Chandrasekhar, RMO Dr. Murali and other health officials rushed to the hospital. They called NPDCL officials, seeking quick restoration of power supply.

It is stated monkeys in the area had been swinging from one electricity pole to another. This led to two electricity wires getting in touch with each other, resulting in sparks, short circuit and blasting of the transformer.

NPDCL staff restored the power supply, though after two hours.

A doctor suggested that there should be back-up batteries for continuous power supply to equipment like oxygen ventilators and incubators, particularly in SNCU and emergency wards. However, there is no such facility.
