Sanitation Workers Halt Commissioner's Cleanup Drive
Kurnool: Municipal workers prevented the commissioner from cleaning a street on Sunday as part of their ongoing protest in Allagadda of Nandyal district. There was a confrontation that occurred when sanitation workers prevented municipal commissioner A.V. Ramesh Babu from sweeping the streets, resulting in a pile-up of garbage on the road during their strike.
The commissioner attempted to address the situation in the morning hours by personally taking up a broom to clean the streets. However, the sanitation workers halted him and forcibly took the broom from his hand, leading to a heated argument between them. Despite the commissioner's efforts, the workers refused to relent.
Meanwhile, in Yemmiganur town, municipal authorities issued warnings to the workers, advising them to report for duty immediately, keeping the worst sanitation situation in the town in mind. They assured the workers of police protection but also cautioned that failure to comply could result in their removal from service. In response, the municipal workers, along with leaders from CITU, organised a protest to oppose the officials' actions. Municipal workers initiated a strike to press for their demands.
Under the banner of AITUC, the workers staged a dharna in front of the municipal office in the city. Pulagam Maddileti, the district general secretary of the AP Municipal Workers Union, expressed dissatisfaction with the state government's treatment of workers. He pointed out that despite being in power for five years, the government had not fulfilled its promises to the workers, alleging that the Chief Minister had made promises before the elections and was now neglecting them. Subsequently, the workers submitted a representation to medical health officer Visweswara Reddy to convey their grievances.
