Bollywood’s Voice For 8 Decades Goes Silent

Asha Bhosle, icon of many moods, passes away at 92, marking the end of a musical era

Mumbai: In what is termed as the end of an era in Bollywood music, Asha Bhosle, legendary singer and two-time Grammy nominee, passed away on Sunday at the age of 92. She breathed her last at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital after being admitted a day earlier due to extreme exhaustion and a chest infection.

Her son, Anand Bhosle, confirmed the news outside Breach Candy Hospital and said the last rites would be held on Monday at 4 pm at Shivaji Park. Hospital officials said that the cause of death was multi-organ failure following a cardiac arrest.

President Droupadi Murmu led India in mourning the passing of Asha Bhosle, saying her death is “an irreparable loss to music lovers”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called her “one of the most iconic and versatile voices India has ever known”. In a post on X, he said her “extraordinary musical journey” enriched the nation’s cultural heritage and touched “countless hearts across the world”.

Union home minister Amit Shah described her death as a sorrowful day for the nation and music lovers, praising her ability to adapt to every genre and the melodies that won over every heart.

Bhosle’s death marked the end of an era in Bollywood music, with her career spanning more than eight decades and encompassing more than 12,000 songs in Hindu over ten Indian languages, including Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Punjabi. She was known for her versatility and has sung many memorable melodies, from romantic songs to ghazals, bhajans, qawwalis to pop. She was known for her ‘cabaret’ and Western-influenced numbers which helped her forge her own identity outside the pale of her sister, the renowned Lata Mangeshkar.

Bollywood songs apart, Asha Bhosle was known as an expert cook and nurtured her passion for food by launching her “Asha’s” restaurant chain in Dubai and Britain.

Over her illustrious career, Asha Bhosle was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2001) and the Padma Vibhushan (2008) and also earned two Grammy nominations. In 2011, she was recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most recorded artist in music history. She also collaborated with global artists well into her later years, including a recent feature on British virtual band Gorillaz’s album The Mountain (Parvat).

In 2023, she performed at a special concert, ASHA@90: Live in concert, in Dubai to celebrate her 90th birthday. Asha Bhosle was also a successful entrepreneur and ran the popular restaurant Asha Bhosle in Dubai and the UK.

Born on September 8, 1935 in the renowned Mangeshkar family, in Maharashtra’s Sangli district, Asha Bhosle was initiated into music by her father Dinanath, just like her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar. Of the four sisters, Lata, Usha and Asha were playback singers, while Meena and brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar are music composers.

Asha Bhosle began singing at the age of 10. Her first song was ‘Chala chala nav bala’ for the 1943 Marathi film ‘Majha Bal’. She entered Hindi cinema five years later with ‘Saawan aaya’ in ‘Chunariya’ (1948). Her work in ‘Naya Daur’ (1957), where she sang all the songs for the female lead Vyjayanthimala, brought her wider recognition. Collaborations with O.P. Nayyar, R.D. Burman and Khayyam made her a household name.

Married to Ganpatrao Bhosle in 1949 when she was 16 and later in life married R.D. Burman, she is survived by her son Anand and her grandchildren.

Among her most popular songs are ‘Abhi na jao chhod kar’, ‘In ankhon ki masti’, ‘Dil cheez kya hai’, ‘Piya tu ab to aaja’, ‘Duniya mein logon ko’ and ‘Zaara se jhoom loon main’, among others.
