Kejriwal's Jailhouse Blues: Pants Down, Belt Up, Politics On!

Kejriwal said “'holding pants while going to Tihar jail is embarrassing,” while pleading to Special Judge Amitabh Rawat for a belt.

To the shock of many people, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has recently found himself in the custody of CBI as a suspect in the now-scrapped excise policy scam. The Rouse Avenue Court while passing the order of sending him to three days of custody ensured that Kejriwal did not suffer much from homesickness.

The court's generosity went beyond the usual provisions for parties in the contamination and permitted Kejriwal to retain his spectacles, no doubt indispensable in looking at lapses in governance, and a copy of the Bhagavad Gita, perhaps for some spiritual solace in facing legal battles. Building on that, it allowed him to see his wife and his lawyers for thirty minutes every day, thus maintaining his political and legal counsel.

These accommodations, perhaps, were not enough; Kejriwal, who is known for his quirks, also managed to get permission to buy a belt, which would help avoid a near-naked controversy during his stay at Tihar Jail.

Well, insiders say that shirt tucked in and holding up his pants was not exactly part of his political agenda.

In a touching gesture of concern for his health, the court allowed Kejriwal to carry his prescribed medicines as well as home-cooked food, no doubt prepared as meticulously as the policies. But even with these comforts in place, the Delhi High Court was not going to let the legal battle die off by not staying his earlier bail.

This series of Kejriwal in the legal jungle has well sure caught the attention of the masses along with a touch of laughter while witnessing a more serious legal battle. Whether these allowances will influence future governance policies remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Even when it comes to compliance with court orders regarding provisions for the differently abled, this seems to have written a new chapter for Kejriwal’s political drama in Delhi.
