Mishap at Rungta Mines Ltd steel plant in Odisha, 2 workers killed

Workers cry lack of adequate safety measures at workplace, demand probe

Bhubaneswar:Two workers were on Monday killed and some others sustained critical injuries after a mechanical structure reportedly caved in at a steel plant in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district.

As per reports, a mechanical structure of Rungta Mines Limited’s steel plant fell on the workers while they were on their duty. Two workers died on the spot while the others sustained grievous injuries.

Around six to seven workers who sustained critical injuries were rushed to the local district headquarters hospital.

The deceased were identified as Bisu Majhi and Vivekananda Sahu. They hailed from West Bengal. They were engaged in the construction work at the plant, it was learnt.

Reports said the unfortunate incident sent shockwaves in the area.

Angry workers resorted to protests alleging a lack of adequate safety measures.

“Workers are forced to work in severe unsafe conditions. They do not value human lives. So, we demand the arrest of the factory manager. They do not follow any rules and regulations. There is no record of anything going on here. We suspect the death of more workers, but they are not revealing the actual numbers. So, we demand a thorough investigation in the matter,” alleged a protester.

Another protester said, “We all are from Bengal. We were working here, but the mechanical department did low-quality work which led to the mishap. The engineers engaged in the work should have basic knowledge, but they are also involved in the low-quality work.”

On being informed, local police and officials concerned rushed to the spot and launched a probe into the incident. Shockingly, the local magistrate refused to say anything and stated that he had been directed to not give any comments in this regard.

“Our higher authorities have asked us not to give any comments,” he stated.
