Modi speaks to Putin on Ukraine visit
New Delhi/Moscow: Just days after his visit to Ukraine, and hours after receiving a call from US President Joe Biden, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin and "shared insights" on his recent visit to Ukraine. Modi emphasised to the Russian President "the importance of dialogue and diplomacy as well as sincere and practical engagement between all stakeholders to achieve an abiding and peaceful resolution of the conflict." The two leaders further resolved to strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations.
The conversation made it clear that New Delhi would continue to deepen its friendship with its time-tested friend Moscow despite the discomfiture of the West. Modi had visited Russia just last month.
Modi also confirmed to President Putin his readiness to attend the BRICS Summit to be held in Kazan in Russia from October 22-24, which will be the first summit of the grouping after its expansion.
During a telephonic conversation, the two leaders also discussed implementation of trade agreements reached during the Prime Minister's visit to Moscow in July, state-owned Tass news agency reported, citing the press service of the Kremlin.
The two sides expressed satisfaction with BRICS cooperation and Prime Minister Modi “confirmed readiness to participate in the integration's summit in Kazan in October held under Russia's chairmanship,” the agency said.
Putin and Modi agreed on continuing contacts bilateral communication at various levels.
“The issues of practical implementation of agreements in the trade and economic area reached during the official visit of the Indian prime minister to Russia in July were discussed, the report said.
"Spoke with President Putin today. Discussed measures to further strengthen Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. Exchanged perspectives on the Russia-Ukraine conflict and my insights from the recent visit to Ukraine. Reiterated India’s firm commitment to support an early, abiding and peaceful resolution of the conflict," Modi said of his conversation on Tuesday on his X handle.
In a statement, New Delhi said, "The two leaders reviewed progress on a number of bilateral issues and discussed measures to further strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. They also exchanged views on a range of regional and global issues of mutual interest.
The official statement further went, "The two leaders exchanged views on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Prime Minister shared insights from his recent visit to Ukraine. ... The two leaders agreed to remain in touch."
