Tribals abduct, kill man; attack police rescue team, leading to ASI's death

Bhopal: A mob of tribals in a Madhya Pradesh village abducted and killed a man suspecting him to be the murderer of a member of their community and later lynched a cop who tried to rescue him, police said on Sunday.
The incident took place in the village of Gadra under Shahpur police station late on Saturday night.
Two people including an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police died and several other policemen sustained minor injuries in the incident, according to Rewa Range Deputy Inspector General of police Saket Pandey.
According to the police, a group of Kol tribals abducted one Sunny Dwivedy suspecting him to be the murderer of one Ashok Kumar and thrashed him to death after confining him in a room.
Police records said Kumar died in a road accident.
After getting a tip off on the incident, a police team led by the Shahpur police station house officer Sandeep Bhartiya rushed to the village to rescue Dwivedy.
The mob however beat the police team and pelted stones at them when they tried to barge into the room, where Dwivedy was held hostage, to rescue him.
Several policemen were injured in the incident.
ASI Charan Gautam, who was among the injured policemen, died during treatment in the hospital.
Chief minister Mohan Yadav described the incident as ‘unfortunate’ and said ‘The perpetrators will not be spared”.
He said the situation is now under control.
