MP: Mining mafias attack officials after DM seizes tractor-trolley carrying illegal sand

Collector seized a tractor-trolley carrying illegal sand, official sources said on Friday

Bhopal: Sand mining mafias attacked a team of officers in Bhind in Madhya Pradesh after the local district collector seized a tractor-trolley carrying illegal sand, official sources said on Friday.

The incident took place near Bhind on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.

Official sources said that the Bhind district collector Saneev Srivastav was on surprise patrolling to curb illegal sand mining in the area.

According to him, he seized a tractor-trolley carrying sand after finding no proper documents and handed it over to the mining department officials to take it to the police station for necessary action.

After he left the spot, some ‘anti-social elements’ reached there and attacked the mining official team.

Later, the assailants fled the spot.

No one was hurt in the incident, official sources said.

Mr Srivastav however denied the reports that he was attacked by the mining mafias.

“The incident took place after he left the place”, he said.

The sand mining mafias have literally become law unto themselves in the Chambal region particularly in Bhind and Morena by attacking the local government officials who tried to curb illegal sand mining in the area.

On March 8, 2012, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer was crushed to death under the wheels of a sand-laden tractor-trolley in Morena district.

Thirty-year-old Narendra Kumar Singh tried to stop the tractor while moving in his official jeep and stood in front of it when the tractor driver refused to heed to his order.

The tractor driver had however sped the vehicle over him and crushed him, leading to his death.

A deputy ranger of forest in Morena was also crushed to death under the wheels when he tried to stop a sand-laden tractor-trolley on September seven, 2018.
