MVA Bets on Navandar in Shiv Sena (UBT) Bastion Parbhani

June 1 is the last date for filing nominations for the legislative council polls. Scrutiny of nominations will take place on June 2 and the last date for withdrawal is June 4. Votes will be counted on June 22.

Mumbai: The Shiv Sena (UBT) has formally announced Dr. Vivek Navandar as the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) candidate for the upcoming Parbhani-Hingoli local authorities’ constituency in the Legislative Council (Vidhan Parishad) elections. Navandar’s nomination assumes significance as Parbhani is considered as the stronghold of the Shiv Sena (UBT). Parbhani is the only municipal corporation in the state that has a mayor from the Uddhav Thackeray-led party.

Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve, in a post on X, said that party chief Uddhav Thackeray has announced the nomination of Navandar, who heads the party’s Parbhani city unit. From the ruling Mahayuti alliance, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena is likely to contest Parbhani-Hingoli constituency. The party has not announced its candidate though several prominent leaders are keen to contest the election from this constituency.

Former MLC Viplav Bajoria – who previously represented this constituency – as well as the son of former Minister Arjun Khotkar, along with several other leaders from the Shinde faction across the Parbhani and Hingoli districts, have expressed their desire to contest from Parbhani-Hingoli constituency.

Elections to 16 legislative council seats from the Local Self-Government bodies and a bypoll from the Nagpur self-government body are scheduled for June 18.

The 16 local self-government bodies constituencies going to the polls include Solapur, Ahmednagar, Thane, Jalgaon, Sangli-Satara, Nanded, Yavatmal, Pune, Bhandara-Gondia, Raigad-Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg, Nashik, Wardha-Chandrapur-Gadchiroli, Amravati, Osmanabad-Latur-Beed, Parbhani-Hingoli and Aurangabad-Jalna.

The opposition MVA has finalised the seat-sharing agreement for the polls, with the Congress contesting the highest eight of 17 seats, followed by the Shiv Sena (UBT) with six seats and NCP (SP) three.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led party will contest Raigad, Jalgaon, Parbhani-Hingoli, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Nanded and Nashik.
