Bhubaneswar: In a deeply disturbing incident that has sparked outrage and grief across Odisha’s Khurdha district, a young man was found dead near the railway tracks close to Dhauli station on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Ramchandra Jena from Kumarabasta village. He died by suicide after enduring alleged harassment by his wife.
According to preliminary reports from the Government Railway Police (GRP), Jena, believed to be in his late twenties, is thought to have jumped in front of a moving train. His body was recovered early Saturday and sent for post-mortem to determine the exact cause and time of death.
What has intensified the shock surrounding the incident is a video Jena reportedly uploaded to social media moments before taking his life. In the emotionally charged message, he directly blamed his wife for mental harassment and described the emotional distress that, he said, led him to the drastic decision.
“I can no longer bear this pain. They (in-laws) did not keep their promise and later asked my wife to create disturbances at my home. My wife also threatened divorce and harassed my family,” he is heard saying in the video.
He further alleged that while laws exist to protect women, there is inadequate recourse for men facing emotional abuse in domestic settings. “My family respected my wishes and supported the marriage. But everything went against us,” he added.
The incident has stunned the local community, where Jena was known as a quiet and responsible individual. “He never showed signs of distress. This is absolutely heartbreaking,” said a neighbour who wished to remain unnamed.
GRP officials have launched a formal investigation and are reviewing the contents of the video. Police said legal proceedings would be initiated if evidence supports the harassment allegations.
