Declaration of Congress list for TS Assembly polls to delay

CEC is expected to release the first list by the second week of October

HYDERABAD: The Congress candidates list for the Telangana Assembly polls will be delayed beyond the expected date of mid-October.

The Congress Central Election Committee (CEC) meeting in Delhi scheduled for Sunday to shortlist the candidates has been postponed as the process of finalising the candidates was continuing.

Party sources said that the committee will now meet on October 3 to deliberate on candidate selection.

Congress candidates are being screened at three levels. The state-level steering committee sought applications from ticket aspirants and shortlisted the candidates as per the recommendations of the Political Affairs Committee (PAC).

This shortlist was submitted to the State Election Committee (SEC) for further screening. The SEC list was referred to CEC for final approval.

In its application process, the Congress received 1,016 applications for 119 Assembly constituencies. It is learnt that they recommended nearly 300 candidates to the CEC.

During an interaction with media persons at the CLP office on Wednesday, TPCC chief A. Revanth Reddy had indicated that consensus had arrived with regard to the selection of candidates for 70 seats and the CEC was expected to release the first list by the second week of October.
